At View From the Wing, Gary notes that Walgreen's is launching a loyalty program in mid-September. It's being led by the former head of United's loyalty program, Graham Atkinson, and, although we don't know a lot about it, it looks like it will be targeted toward certain items, including getting shots (We'll see who the true point grubbers are!).
The dynamics of this program will be interesting. It's been a while since we've seen an entirely new program by a store this large and I'm curious as to how the lessons of the airlines will be baked in. My local supermarket recently ran a game piece promotion in which certain items received extra game pieces, allowing the store to target higher-margin items. That appears to be one of the roads that Walgreen's is going down.
Once all the details are out, I'll write a little more about it.
